The U.S. Public Health Service COSTEP Program

"I feel that my COSTEP experiences helped to prepare me for my full-time employment with US PHS. My COSTEP experiences afforded me some insight to the opportunities for working on active duty for the Corps. Having already served two COSTEP terms, I felt confident that I could wear the uniform correctly and perform the duties expected of me as a commissioned officer. Both of my COSTEP experiences have only helped me in my career and were rewarding in themselves. I would highly recommend students who are interested in the Corps to apply for a COSTEP."

IHS employs 20-30 Environmental Health interns each
year through the US Public Health Service Junior Commissioned Officer Student
Training Extern Program (JrCOSTEP). Assignments are available throughout
the year, but most are filled in the summer. COSTEP's are assigned to a
preceptor at a field location and do Environmental Health work typical of an
IHS Sanitarian. COSTEP's are Commissioned Officers for the
summer and earn approximately $2000.00 a month as an Ensign in the
PHS.
For information about the COSTEP program and how to apply, please visit the
U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps COSTEP site
(http://www.usphs.gov/student) for
application packets, pay, benefits and entry requirements.
For information specifically about opportunities in
Environmental Health and Injury Prevention, please contact Kelly Taylor at

the summer of 2007 had to say about their experiences.
